Sunday, March 29, 2020 - I've always loved Copain's version, so I was excited to see what Kevin, Jeff and company could do with this vineyard. This is probably my 4th or 5th bottle and they keep getting better. A sauvage syrah with a very Rhone-like nose of black pepper, crushed rocks and bacon fat. Medium-bodied, chewy and fairly tannic, with flavors of olive tapenade, smoke, gravel and blackberries, with a floral undercurrent. While the Rhys Santa Cruz Mountain estate syrahs are more more feminine and elegant (think Cote Rotie), this is a more masculine style (think St Joseph). A great syrah at a great price with the 20% case discount.
