Friday, December 16, 2016 - This cuvée is priced at a lower level than the Sperss and Gaja's other upper tier Barolo and Barbaresco wines. Typically, most of the fruit is from the former Gromis family vineyard in La Morra. With this wine I hoped for a junior Gaja Sperss, but drinkable and enjoyable at a much younger age. And I was not disappointed. Drunk over three evenings (during which the wine only mellowed a very small amount). Deep, dark red. A lovely quintessential Barolo bouquet, probably better than the palate. Savoury, tarry aromas with rich red berries, earth, liquorice, espresso and a touch of tobacco leaf. In the mouth, particularly on the first day, this is still a Gaja and there are still some serious, prominent tannins and acids yet to fully integrate. However, it is relatively approachable now. Not much more than medium bodied, savoury, dry and earthy, showing that toasty oak. Ripe and rich fruit with typical Gaja tactile mouthfeel. Good length. I imagine it'd improve with 3-5 years in the cellar, but I wouldn't expect it to be a long term proposition.
