2016 Clonakilla Riesling

Community Tasting Note

Friday, February 11, 2022 - Pale silver gold. None of the usual semi-mature notes on the nose. Instead, fragrant stewed apple, hints of Bickford’s lime cordial and grapefruit pith too.

Richer, softer palate than expected of a Canberra six year old Riesling (or based on unreliable memory of the last time tasted). Probably a crowd pleaser but it loses its line and suffers from middle-age spread on the back palate. Reasonable length but diffuse.

A good wine, but not developing how I thought it would, nor to my taste. Not the line or structure expected, or that compared with the textural 2017 or seemingly ageless 2015. Without the acid cut, me thinks it will age faster and without quite the grace of those two vintages. It’s already showing oily hints.

I enjoyed drinking this in its first two years and cursed myself for not being able to find it afterwards amidst the chaos that is my cellar. Shame. Perhaps a sooner rather than later proposition. Or perhaps I’m getting harder to please.
