Sunday, June 9, 2013 - Paired with Maine chopped suey, this wine is an interesting concoction that when we tasted it at the Novy tasting room in ~2005 it was described as having a bacon fat nose, which we remember it exhibiting. Opened a dark ruby, this has a unique if not bizarre nose of sour cherry, bacon fat, quince, bell pepper. Certainly flawed in its composition, it nevertheless shows very dark sweet fruits of black cherry, blackberry, tart cranberry, menthol, licorice, scorched earth. Lacking acidity, this velveteen syrup is a very unique wine that would serve a good teaching point for the particular flaws it demonstrates. Still very drinkable and enjoyable. On day two under vac-u-vin this soured up, with grapefruit notes dominating. The bizarre matchstick/sulfuric note were present still with agitation, but had calmed down some. The sour acidity detracted from the experience on this day.
