Friday, March 10, 1995 - Historic note. Apart from a 1923 Chambertin that was oxidised and tasted like very rich stewed tea, this is the oldest wine I have drunk to date. English bottled by J H and J Brooke and with a label done on a typewriter! - I still have it. It had some amber at the edge and that deep blood red colour one gets in old Bordeaux. A touch pruney on the nose at the start and ivy leaves and dried fruit flavours but it opened out amazingly and beautifully over 3 hours. At its best after about 2 hours in the decanter: cedar, mint, tobacco, spice (cumin) - it was delicious though some tannin still showing. Superb.
