Saturday, October 25, 2003 - On the nose, not quite so flamboyant and “in your face” as the Ducru, but still showing remarkable richness and finesse. No trace of those slightly barnyardy aromas appearing in most of the other Medoc (where did they go, or were they ever there?). My and some others choice for Wine Mouth of the Night. The adjective “seamless” comes to mind, but this doesn’t really do the tasting experience justice. What is really striking here is the combination of great complexity and seamless integration of rich fruit, acid, and tannin—not a single room lacking corners and angles, but really a labyrinthine series of corridors, all similarly smooth and seamless. I was reminded of Beaudelaire’s line from one of his poems (which I quote from memory): “Tout la est luxe et calme…”. Anyway, I convinced myself at least that life is too short not to drink a great LLC like this at least once. I am guessing that the aromatic complexity of this wine will continue to develop with more bottle age.
