85 Points

Thursday, July 25, 2013 - I hate to give this wine an 85 because it doesn't seem fair to judge a 21 year old Pinot by current standards. We bought this wine at W-S in June (together with several other vintages, but this was the oldest) primarily to learn about well-aged Pinots.

It was definitely earthy on the nose, with not much fruit being evident. First pour was quite earthy with hints of cedar. With the second glass (definitely the best), the earthiness started to evaporate and the remaining hints of tart cherry began to shine through. The third glass (end of the bottle) began to taper off quite quickly. By two hours after opening, the only remaining characteristic was a smokey acidity.

If you happen to still have this wine, drink it now & drink it quickly. Definitely a fun experience.
