Thursday, October 30, 2003 - (Dinner with Clair & Paul at Union Bay Cafe.) This wine just never quits. A screaming nose of lead pencil, cedar, pie-spice, and black fruits was simply intoxicating. Gorgeous complexity, this nose was a joy all night long (2.5 hours to consume the bottle). The mid-palate on this was fat and fleshy with layers of flavor and complexity, and with time it gained a very distinct sweetness and purity. The finish was largely resolved and very long and powerful with flavors of earth and mushroom. However, unlike prior bottles, this one was a touch choppy and seemed to show some subtle signs of oxidation (caramel notes) and roughness that I have not seen from three other bottles this year. That said, this was still an extraordinary wine!
