Friday, September 5, 2014 - Decanted due to a cork mishap, though this was almost immediately open for business. Medium crimson color, starting to show signs of maturity at the rim. Unmistakable Bordeaux nose of grape jam, licorice, asian spices, car tire, cigarette butt, sous bois and pencil shavings, with a distinct gravel/slate note. The palate on this hasn't been diminished at all by nearly 30 years in the bottle. This is full-bodied, with concentrated red fruit, tobacco, and a lingering minerality that periodically re-asserts itself on the persistent, 15+ second-long finish. Tannins on this are still present (if smoothly integrated), suggesting another several years of optimal drinking. This is a great wine; I would serve this to someone if they had never tried fully mature Bordeaux and wanted to taste what all the fuss is about.
