Sunday, November 26, 2023 - Cassis, touch of oak. Touch of herb and mineral. Deep and pure for entry level Cab in Napa. Nice acid and touch of heat

12/9/2023 8:55:00 AM - Wineguy, sadly that has become the case. Not much under 75 that is drinkable. I’m trying not to buy for that reason as well, but there are a few I can’t give up.

12/9/2023 10:08:00 AM - DQ I really like CA Cabs other than the over ripe stuff. I most likely always have a few around but like you say anything under $75 isn’t worth drinking. Last buy was 17 Whitehall Lane Leonardini at CostCo for $60 which is well worth it. Before that some 15 & 16 Larkmead Cab for $99. I’m fine with drinking mostly Bordeaux. Cheers !!

12/10/2023 7:02:00 AM - I am pretty eclectic in my drinking tastes. I actually don’t mind a big extracted Cali wine if it is well made and I am in the mood. But if I am spending big money I’d rather be spending it on Bordeaux backfills. I have enough Cali wines to last my lifetime, although I know there are a few that I won’t stop buying anytime soon even though I should.
But what I don’t do is try to drink Bordeaux when I want a big extracted Cali style wine. When I drink Bordeaux I am looking for balance and nuance and fruit PLUS other palate attributes. Intensity is great but you can have intensity without being a one dimensional fruit forward wine.

12/10/2023 9:22:00 AM - DQ I have lots of variety in the cellar too. Plenty of Burgs, Italians & Spain wines. My recent kick is Priorat that we visited in September. I just bought a bottle of 2010 Larkmead LMV to drink over the Holidays. I had a couple bottles before but drank them too early in 2018.

CA Cabs might be the few ways to get powerful reds as Bordeaux seems to be going the other direction. Backfilling Bordeaux is less costly so there lies the dilemma. Bought a 00 Pontet Canet, 03 Calon Segur & 05 Philip Togni for Holidays too. See which ones are better. Cheers !!

12/10/2023 10:25:00 AM - Sounds like a great Christmas comparison! I am thinking we will do a ‘95 Ducru-Beaucaillou and a ‘99 Verite Muse. Now that is a Cali wine that is beautiful with age.

I really like Priorat, but struggle to know the ideal drinking window, esp. as the composition of the blend varies so much. Curious to hear if you have any favorites.

12/10/2023 1:13:00 PM - DQ I’m just learning Priorat too. I feel most need 5-7 years in the bottle. They were serving 16’s & 17’s when we were there. I like Merum Desti, Alvaro Palacios Las Terrazes, Scala Dei Prior, Mas Doix Salanques & Mas Alta Cirerets. I want to try Clos Mogador Manyetes which is mostly Carignan. I like more Carignan which is higher acid and allows more age. The higher the Grenache (low acidity) the earlier you can drink it. I tried a 2020 Merum Desti and not close to ready. All of these wines are $40-$45 and $50 max.
