96 Points

Tuesday, March 30, 2004 - Farmington Wine Class. Inky, opaque, almost pitch black color. Powerful, explosive nose with spicy oak, raspberry liqueur, espresso. A bit overextracted I thought, with some slightly astringent oak tannins, but a long, beautiful finish. Great chewy mouthfeel, with dense, concentrated, extracted flavors. A little too much oak for my taste, but otherwise impeccably balanced. If the oak integrates a little more, this will merit an even higher score. A delicous wine, and it was a great experience to try it, but it's just not my style - at least at this price range. I think I annoyed a few people in the class who went ga-ga over the wine when I said (tasted double blind, before the identity was revealed) that it tasted like a $200 barbecue wine to me. I stand by that description even now that I know what it was.
