Thursday, October 22, 2020 - The '09 Gravner Breg is an aggressive, powerful wine. Texturally, I'd say it combines the viscosity and richness of a sweet wine with the tannic structure of Nebbiolo. Compared to the '05 Breg which I've tasted a few times (my only other Gravner), the '09 is richer, more tannic, and aggressive, and maybe lacks some of the complexity. But it's a fun wine.

On the nose, I found apricots, orange peel, licorice, and holiday spices (think cloves, cinnamon - somewhat spicy). On the palate, I found a rich, tannic, somewhat viscous texture, with dried apricots, smoke, and spices. As noted earlier, it remains powerful and aggressive, needing some time to settle down, and at this stage the tannins are a bit drying and lack some elegance. It's a really unique, fun wine, but I think another 5-10 years will be helpful here in settling it down and better integrating the tannins.
