Saturday, December 2, 2017 - Italian and fairly simple – straightforward descriptors for a straightforward sip. Hailing from the lesser known Le Marche region, this 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano was easy drinking and stylistically as you would expect, driven by bright red fruit (strawberry, sour cherry) and earthiness (dark soil, gravel, cedar). As the wine opened up, raspberry, blackberry, and spiced plum all joined into the mix. Suggestions of herbs and sweet tobacco came forward, while cherry and pepper took over the finish. Aging in stainless steel tanks left the wine with an overall fresh feel, and no oaky characteristics. Between that, relatively smooth tannins, moderate acidity, and palatable juiciness, the wine definitely qualified as a little more than just a sipper. Not much development took place over the evening or through to the next night, but no matter – what it did put forth was pleasant enough, and for $20 there wasn’t much to complain about. If you’re looking for a safe, non-ostentatious red for any table, this is a good bet.
