Saturday, November 6, 2021 - Drank at Anhelo alongside a 2018 Gravette de Certan, 2014 Malescot (amongst others)- the MSE & VCC 2nd label bested this premier Bordeaux wine for all of us. Maybe in decanter for 3 hours but tasted throughout. I am a huge VCC fan (one of my favorite chateau/wineries) but today this was not close to any good vintage (not even talking great) I have ever had. Didn’t have time or interest to sit with it so a fleeting impression is all I can give.
My only advice is to hold and hope the critics were remotely close to their declarations on this wine. Try again 2026/2027.

11/9/2021 8:02:00 AM - Hi Ryan - Do you have any sense of whether a bad bottle or bad phase of the wine contributed to your score vs. simply a bad vintage of a good wine? I have 6 bottles and I’ve yet to try the 2017.

11/9/2021 8:29:00 AM - I am a boy band fan of VCC so a poor tasting from them is a shock- this one took me by surprise. Unfortunately I have had extremely little experience with ‘17s and the recent ones I did have, not VCC & Ducru Beaucaillou were both disappointing (for different reasons). Add to that, I pulled this cork with a large number of other wines that all garnered my attention and therefore only had my impression and not a deep understanding.
My only thought is it’s in a strange phase and hope with time it will come together. It wasn’t bad, lite or flat it was simply…. Boring and disappointing? With years in the cellar I hope we will be rewarded but for now it is certainly, IMO, not worth opening.

Regards to scale- I purposely don’t drink crap (will throw it out or spill it down the drain). Life is too short for crappy wine and empty calories.
