Wednesday, March 26, 2014 - Decanted for 3 hours. It needed the time. Started out on the thin acidic side. After the 3 hour decant, it blossomed into a really nice wine. I find many people don't give these wines enough time to fully open and show their stuff. Still dark ruby to purple in color. no browning at the edges. Aromas of black cherry, leather, earth, currant, and smoke. The flavors mirror the nose with black cherry, earth, black currant. A touch acidic in the finish. The tannins are smooth and lead to a long finish. A little more evolved than most Montelena Estate wines at this age. Still showing very well. It may improve with age, but will certainly hold for years.

3/27/2014 4:53:00 AM - I couldn't agree more on the breathing time, especially so for Montelena Estate Cabs. Same is true for older Diamond Creek, Ridge Monte Bello and other traditional (70's-mid 90's) style Cabs. Good review, I wish more would be as descriptive. it is so much more helpful than simply a number or "drink now" conclusion.
