Thursday, April 29, 2010 - This is my least favorite of all the Domaine Serene pinots, especially considering that it consists of fruit from the renowned 2005 vintage. That said, this wine has come a long way with a little age.

In the glass, it's a dark crimson with hints of purple and tawny that show in the light. Its floral nose does not show the typical spice notes that are so evident in most of the reds from this producer. On the palate this wine is tart and sharp at first -- one of the elements that consistently tainted my opinion of the Guadalupe vineyard site -- with an emphasis on sour cherry and citrus flavors. But after about 30-minutes in the glass, dark fruit notes started to emerge and the sharp flavors become more evenly integrated. Ultimately, the short-to-medium finish rounded out a medium-bodied wine that was enjoyable to drink.

While it's a little hard to justify the single-vineyard Domaine Serene pricing this bottle attracts, it's a pleasant enough wine to warrant a review. I just won't be recommending it to others anytime soon...
