Saturday, October 24, 2020 - World Series Mondo Wine Event (Duluth, GA): Tasted blind. This tied with the Leflaive Montrachet for #3 WOTN. My tasting notes state that while this is a noble and beautiful wine with a wonderful Pauillac nose, it is tighter on the finish that I would like. Having tasted this wine many times before, this was not the best showing of the '96 Mouton.

a. was just an inferior bottle?
b. is on it's downside?
c. maybe not decanted properly/correct airtime?
or
d. has much more time left?
Thanks! Mark

Based on my last two tastings, I believe it is currently in its dumb phase. Contrast this to the '96 Latour, which is wide open for business right now, I believe the Mouton needs at least 5 more years to emerge from this phase. Also, it is important to note that it was up against some stiff competition that night. I sometimes feel that we do these wines a disservice when we line up legendary wines in a blind format and then expect our palates to discern the levels of greatness. Part of me just wants to open one bottle at a time and enjoy it for what it is without a comparison to another bottle. However, it is fun doing it this way too.

11/8/2020 10:19:00 AM - Thanks for your input.....I tasted this in BDX twice back in '17 and with a nice decant, it was beautiful. I am hoping it is just a dumb phase as you say.....I am really looking forward to this, but was hoping I wouldn't have to wait another 5 years!
