Wednesday, June 30, 2010 - One of two bottles we tasted (the other was a 1983 Mouton Rothschild). Bottle opened by host, and I did not see cork, however saw a couple tiny pieces of cork on pouring and there was a very slight cedary/corky odour on pouring, which dissipated.

In comparison to the Mouton, the Cheval Blanc looked much younger, a ruby red with only a slight tawnyness within, and at the rim. Starting to show it's age, but with more life left in it. Certainly much darker in color than the Mouton, richer looking.

On the nose, much more going on than the Mouton. Strawberries, cherry, a little blackberry. A surprising amount of oak and charcoal. On the tongue, much more fruit than I expected, and certainly much more than the Mouton. A delight. Strawberry, cherry, quite a lot of oak, and a little leather. Let me stress this, LOADS of lovely fruit flavour, but VERy balanced and drinkable.

Only downside was an oxidised, metallic aftertaste. This lasted an hour or two, but did die down, making the wine smoother. I'm probably not yet experienced enough to understand why this was, but it was very apparent, and was a first for me - not having detected this in the 83 Mouton Rothschild, nor in the 82 Chateau La Lagune I opened recently. I would have rated this Cheval Blanc higher were it not for this.
