Wednesday, August 21, 2019 - AP 10 18. I’ve always felt like Fritz Haag’s Auslesen kind of get lost in the lineup. The Spatlesen are always gorgeously racy and light, whereas the goldcaps are spectacular showpieces. The 2017 clocks in at no exception to that rule. A beautiful wine and exceptionally well made, but everything that made the immediate lower and higher Pradikat neighbors so breathtaking just seem a bit lost in the Auslese. Gorgeously ripe and defined although having a slightly hollow middle-pallet that seemed plague a lot of Mosel producers in this vintage (Zilliken and Schaefer exhibited this as well), it just feels like something is missing for completeness. It filled out a bit over the next few days so I have faith this will turn into something great over time. But I’m keeping my hands off my remaining bottles for a while.
