1978 Château La Mission Haut-Brion

100 Points

Saturday, August 26, 2023 - Second time of tasting, but from a different source, my previous reservations about the finish dissipated. With the right bottle this is up there with the 1955 and 1982. Beef blood and smoked sausage dominate the nose, and it is a tertiary beast on the palate with old leather and plum, and with everything integrated and multilayered. The depth end palate and on the finish is other wordly. It's all about bottles at this age, but one of my greatest drinking experiences. This was decanted and filtered an hour before, but with a stopper to prevent oxidation. However, drink efficiently as it starts to fade after an hour.
