2017 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barbera d'Alba

Friday, March 11, 2022 - My personal "unwritten rule", to give all G. Rinaldi Barberas (as well as Dolcetto & Freisa) like at least 3+ years after release, seems to be just right, when drinking the 2017 today. Time in bottle smoothened it; the juicyness and huge fruit of the vintage are still here, just more pliant and generous. Red & black cherry, blueberry, red gooseberry (especially on the nose), licorice, sweet spices, a small handful of garden herbs and some slate emerge in a lush, intense and fruity environment. The mouthfeel is crystalline with a kick of pushing Barbera acidity, the perfect counterpoise to the intense, sweetish fruit. This Barbera has plenty of additional time in its lifespan.
