Friday, January 14, 2022 - 2019 Visit to Cromwell (Central Otago, NZ): Three hectares of vines, Dijon and Pommard clones, predominantly 10/5 clone, planted in 2001. What Jen described as “cool site in a warm region”. The hill usually protects from frost. The vineyard is in Bannockburn, but Valli typically finishes picking two weeks later than Felton Road. This vintage, four picks. Yield 3.9 tonnes per ha. Whole bunch 25%, new oak 27%. A fairly red fruited bouquet with dry brushwood and earth. Similar on palate. Earthy and powerful, “the power in the tannins”, said Jen. Spherical and smooth on the palate. “A little silkier than normal”, said Jen. 3/4.
