Monday, December 13, 2021 - Made from 100% Grenache since 2000 and labeled Nicolas after their son since 2006. Has the IGP Cotes Catalanes because the Cotes de Roussillon AOC rules don't allow 100% Grenache. They require it to be blended, often with Carignan. 65-year-old vines on the foothills of the Pyrenees. Green harvesting (removing bunches) in the Spring to concentrate the grapes. Aged in Burgundy barrels for 20% of the wine for 10 months.
Ripe red and dark berry fruit on the nose with a bit of garrigue. Plus intensity and richness. The palate is round and mouth-filling with an immediate rush of ripe blueberry but a savory backend. There's a bit of heat on the nose and palate at a heady 15% alcohol, but it's fine with big food. Low acid and soft tannins, but it never feels flabby. A wine packed with ripe berry fruit but not much influence of oak in the flavor profile. A good introduction to French wines for those who like ripe, fruit forward wines.
