Friday, January 7, 2022 - The last time I had a UK sparkler was a few years ago, but after watching the 60 Minutes segment on wine and climate change I thought I'd give it another shot. The LCBO only has a few to choose from, and this one seemed to be the best reviewed.

It's a decent enough sparkling BdB with some autolytic notes, citrus, and a creamy mouthfeel. Nice balance. Everything is in the right place. But it's also generic. It doesn't have the depth, complexity or character of many similarly priced Champagnes.

Is that because the vines are so young? The difference in soil/chalk? Winemaking skill? Will this improve with bottle age?

I'm don't know the answer, but as it stands right now I can think of quite a few entry level Champagnes (Pierre Moncuit Hugues de Coulmet, Laherte Freres Ultradition, etc.) or sparkling wines from countries like South Africa (Graham Beck Brut Zero) and Spain (anything from Recaredo) that I prefer to this... and at less than a third of the price.
