Sunday, July 20, 2014 - If I were drinking this blind, I think I would guess Pauillac but with a question mark about the sweetness of fruit and generosity. The wine was evolved but not unduly so for a 20 year old. Colour was still a deep red with slight rust tints visible when pouring. The nose showed ripe slight porty red and dark fruit. The palate was quite full bodied with firm but ripe tannic backbone and showed some depth, secondary development and complexity with faint hints of tobacco and adequate length. Some people complain of excessive oak treatment smothering Olmaia's fine fruit but, for my palate, time had integrated it perfectly in this bottle. Nevertheless I would recommend drinking up as I sense that it may be beginning to dry out.
