Thursday, January 20, 2022 - This reminds me of a date set up by your friends that starts off well despite expectations and then seems to head down the inevitable hill as the night progresses. Popped and poured. This is drinking well for the bottling: there’s no time like the present. Lightly perfumed at first with residual overly-toasted oak emerging on the nose after an hour or so—true to expectations from this negociant. Bright sour cherry fruit on the lean but enjoyable palate with earthy and herbal notes in the background. The overly-toasted oak becomes more prominent as the flavors open up (i.e. devolve). This is better and more authentic when first opened, and then the “Magnien modern” aspects degrade the experience. There are some unresolved tannins on the finish, but I don’t think the overall package will improve with more cellar time. Drink it with the friends who set you up so it doesn’t sit open too long. They deserve to share.
