Monday, November 16, 2020 - Believe the hype on this as a value buy. Was looking forward to trying as I found the 2018 Jadot entry-level Beaujolais (non-villages) to be a solid bargain with plenty of character and freshness. This is a notable step up for like $3-5 more on average, with more structure and energy; not a revelatory wine in the abstract but truly great QPR.

Fresh, high toned nose of strawberry, cranberry, a little candied but not in a bad way at all. There's also some vaguely earthy/minerally stemmy tone. I'm not sure if there are stems used here (I doubt it?)- but it sets it apart from the plain Beaujolais.

Nice punchy acidity on the palate, tart fruit, not elegant acidity, but more importantly, far more refreshing than most other grocery store bargains. Pretty surprising tannic structure too, chewy and present.

I wish the sweet fruit from the nose found its way to the palate a little more to balance the acid and tannin, but it's still delicious and we can't expect perfect balance on a $12 red. It's true that only a few dollars more nets some serious competition in wine shops, but especially for extremely-widely-available wine, or casual weeknight dinner wine, this is in the upper echelon.
