Wednesday, April 15, 2020 - This was an auction purchase: a birth year wine to be opened on my 63rd birthday. Given the lousy vintage I figured it would be a fun curiosity at best and vinegar at worst. Peeled the foil and was faced with a sunken cork and black mould. The cork itself was completely soaked, and it shredded even with a Durand. But the wine looked good: excellent colour with slight bricking. The nose at first was cow dung, burnt sugar and smoke... but the palate was still completely alive with sweet strawberry, dark cherry and woodsy forest floor. The funky nose faded over two hours and the palate continued to gain weight and depth. It’s definitely a senior citizen, but a vital one. A total surprise.

Update 24 hours later: Just poured the last glass and wow. It’s hard to believe that a 63 year old Burg from a bad vintage would continue to improve over 24 hours, but it did. This last glass is truly marvellous. Happy birthday to me!
