Wednesday, January 10, 2024 - There was a time when I thought 2018 was a bit off-vintage for white burgundy, but I couldn't be more wrong, because all 2018s are on a very good path.

Straight after opening, there was plenty of peach, nectarine, flowers, herbs and cream/butter on the nose - delicate perfume, but the wine itself was very closed and shy.

The real magic happened after 90-120m in decanter. Wine became more serious and robust as Charmes usually is. The nose was dominated by lemon and grapefruit peel, all wrapped in a very fresh, wet stone minerality that can't be found anywhere else than Cote dOr. On the palate, the wine is very young and lively with strong but perfectly integrated acidity, which will keep the wine for another decade or more. It is already perfectly drinkable, but the wine just started to kick. No sign of even minor oxidation after 5 years on the bottle.

The only part of the experience when you realize, that 2018 is a complicated vintage, is a bit shorter (in terms of Lafon) but very satisfying finish.

As always with the Lafon, you get the Meursault in its purest possible form.

Anyway let the wine breathe, without air you just wasting your money and potential of the outstanding bottle.

Lucky me still have 5 bottles left, so I can follow the progress every 1-2 years.
