95 Points

Sunday, October 22, 2023 - Decanted and served with grilled pork chop ~ 30 minutes later. Black/red with slight meniscus. Nose (and palate) gained complexity with air- last glass was the best. On nose, black cherry, licorice, pipe tobacco, sweet cherry and savory spices. On palate, black cherry, iron, orange rind, black licorice & blackberry (nice sweet / savory combination). High acidity, medium tannins, medium+ body and very long finish.

First time trying this wine and I loved it. One of the best wines I have tried this year. 95+/-
Will definitely buy some more.

10/22/2023 7:18:00 PM - Totally agree on how good this wine is and how consistent it is from vintage to vintage. I’ve been drinking it since the 1980’s. In most vintages I posit that in a blind tasting with other SuperTuscans this will be preferred and at half or less the price of the more renowned versions.

10/23/2023 7:25:00 PM - 30 minute decant, but needed 1 - 1.5 hours. I bought this randomly from JJ Buckley in 2021 and pulled it on a whim - I had been on a streak of drinking okay wine so this was a treat! This drank beautifully but given how it improved with air, clearly better with a little more time but it was not infaticide by any means. Given comments from you guys I will likely buy a 6-pack or case from a more recent vintage.

10/23/2023 7:29:00 PM - Random question given some of you have had multiple vintages of this wine - how would the '19 vintage of this be for a birth year wine?
    Thanks for any feedback.

10/23/2023 7:36:00 PM - Probably pretty good, but for a 2019 birth year, I would go with Barbaresco or Barolo….spectacular vintage and they will age for 20-30 years easily. Some prices are reasonable as well….Consider the likes of Giacomo Fenocchio, Brezza, Brovia, Francesco Rinaldi, the Produttori, Guiseppe Cortese, et al…

10/23/2023 7:38:00 PM - CW, thank you for the note on the airtime. Like you, I feel drinking early can be quite good so long as it's aired properly!

Fwiw, I have no experience with other vintages. Sorry.

10/24/2023 6:24:00 AM - Thanks for follow-up. Will likely get the base Produttori Barberesco and some Bordeaux. I'll keep the '19 Castellare for myself...
