Monday, October 30, 2023 - Don't understand some of the super high ratings on this vintage of MSE; I have really enjoyed the producer's wine in the past (especially the '14 vintage) but the '19 didn't impress me all that much. It was decanted a few hours and followed over 3 nights. First night it exuded a lot of animalistic reductive (?) funk that I often get with this producer but that blew off eventually to reveal smooth dark red fruits and not much else other than some fancy new oak. A bit over-extracted and oaked. It never got that complex or nuanced, unfortunately, but maybe my bottle was a little off or just super-closed up for business. Not a vintage for me to stock up on when there are wines like, e.g. the '19 Branaire Ducru that blow it out of the water for the same tariff. If I were assigning a numerical rating would be in the upper 80s ...

10/30/2023 5:21:00 PM - Jeff Leve gave it 96 points so that is quite a difference. I bought 6 ay CostCo for $39.99 so don’t have much skin in the game. I probably won’t even try it for 6 plus years.

10/30/2023 8:01:00 PM - Interesting, I haven’t noticed any reductive note like that with mine. Wondering if you had an off bottle. I do think these need a lot of time to come into their own, and if you do pop one, a 2-3hr decant is pretty much required or the structure dominates everything.

10/31/2023 5:45:00 AM - I've got that initial stinky note with MSE over a few vintages, but it blows off pretty quickly. I did notice in the '14 that quality kind of morphed into more of a classic "Bordeaux funk" note of marsh and sweaty wool cardigan, which I actually like, so yeah, give the wine 10+ years and I bet it will come together better.
