Sunday, March 3, 2024 - As a few others have noted, this is a bit tannic and heavy right now, quite different than the professional reviews suggest (but consistent with another 2019 St. Estephe I’ve tried in this price range). The fruit is there but it’s underwhelming, and leans more to plum than cassis.

I expect this will improve with age, but right now I don’t find it very enjoyable. Maybe the pros got it wrong?

P.S. It’s interesting that this wine contains 3% Petit Verdot, which Robert Parker once described as providing “the hard tannic backbone that is otherwise absent as a result of a high concentration of Merlot.” (Bordeaux, A Consumer’s Guide, 4th Ed.)
