Thursday, January 15, 2009 - Drank over a dinner of Beef Bourginon and truffled mashed potatoesr at home with Todd and Mina on a Sunday night. Decanted for an hour beforehand and consumed over a couple of hours. Black/blood red in colour and just showing some transparency at the edges and the only visual hint of its true age was that it was slightly watery at the rim. Rather restrained nose of tar, freshly-sharpened pencils and deep, not-quite-ripe blackberries. Lovely big muscular mouthfeel with great tannic structure balanced by good acid. Some length but a bit slow to unravel in your head. Dark and brooding but lovely. Will be better in several years. Classic, classic Bordeaux at its best.....if you like, slightly austere, restrained wine. I've never fully come to understand the term "the sleeper of the vintage" but this wine probably sums up what people mean by it.
