2018 Realm Cellars The Falstaff

Community Tasting Note

Likes this wine:

96 Points

Sunday, December 5, 2021 - Opened by HMC for us.....right from the pnp, the nose was exquisite. Perfumed florals abound, in spades. It took a good amount of time for the dark fruited palate to get up close to the nose, after a few hours of air, it improved. In fact, I think I would have rated the nose a 96 or 97 right from the start, the wine a 95-96 with time. It probably gets a few points better from here, too. Thanks for opening, Jimbo!

12/19/2021 7:41:00 AM - Thanks, Michael. Glad to help. It is cab franc driven and was HMC's only bottle I believe. I don't have any but wish I did, it was quite good, but also quite young. It is doable now with the right decant. The quality is very evident with the nose right from the pnp. One of the best I can remember in the last 5 years for me. Right up there with the '16 Pontet Canet in my memory. This probably gets a few points better on the palate but I wonder if you'll then sacrifice some of the great nose in the process? Certainly this one can go many, many years......I should also note that the cab franc was just right. Not overly green nor overly herbal which is exactly where I love them. Now, will it develop more of those qualities with aging? I honestly have no idea. I like some herbs, but less greenery in my francs. The last thing I want is to feel like I'm crawling on the forest floor covered in moss, oregano and sage, inhaling dandelions and green peppers nonstop. But that may just be weird old me.
