Wednesday, August 25, 2021 - My second Pinot from Brick House after trying their entry-level, which I thought was stellar QPR around $30. This one was absolutely gorgeous, even better QPR at $50- shows that rare combination of extraordinary depth, effortless elegance, and genuine complexity. If anything I might be slightly underrating this, and although I thought it was stunning from the first glass (I loved the youthful vibrancy here), it could easily age too, and feels complex enough to be worth it.

Beautifully perfumed nose, not "exploding" from the glass but very close. Lots of layers to unpack- there's a convincing combination of both red and black fruits, ranging from bright raspberry all the way to spiced black plum or even cassis. The oak tone here is not only well integrated but fairly unique, highly evocative of root beer, brown spices, sort of a deeper and "earthier" oak tone rather than a more generic vanilla, etc. Best of all, there was a twinge of meatiness, sort of a salty cured meat note that I very rarely get in any Pinot Noir that isn't from Burgundy. Super harmonious and engaging nose, could sniff it all night.

The palate is less complex than the nose, but absolutely perfect in its delivery of the fruit and structure. You can sense the super fresh and ripe black cherries, maybe some raspberry or blueberry liqueur, riding a wave of powerful wet-stone minerality and beautiful acidity, super vibrant and crystalline but stopping short of tartness. Tannins are perfect too, just a gently sticky texture, extremely elegant, lending a weight to the wine without ever appearing coarse. Toward the finish there's a sudden little lift that accentuates the slightly salty, meaty, briney accent from the nose.

I understand this is the last vintage of this cuvee as the vines are succumbing to phylloxera? If that's correct, sad to hear. Really really looking forward to trying their even higher-end offerings now.
