88 Points

Monday, December 15, 2014 - I was a fan of Verdignan's '95, '96 and '98 which were reliably sturdy clarets punching well to their cru bourgeois weight. I finished my last '96 about 2 years ago and it was the best of the lot. This '05 was fuller and more structured than my memory of its predecessors but at this stage less refined. Colour and flavours were still quite youthful but any rough edges of oak and tannin have been rounded out. The medium/full bodied palate showed a savoury character with quite dense plum fruit laced with wet leather, very lively acidity and marked ripe tannins supporting the finish. I think that there is potential for further improvement. Good wine and fair QPR for Bordeaux at €16.
