Tuesday, November 15, 2022 - Always amazing to open old Napa cabs from “the old school” reliable makers. Starring in the 1976 “Judgement of Paris” along with Montelena, Stag’s Leap, etc., Clos Du Val is Napa royalty with French ties in the Goelet family. I sent a bottle of this as a gift so I thought I should open one to try. Cork trouble! I lost my Durand! But i was able to strain through my trusty sterling screen-aerator and did OK for the pour. First taste was a little bitter but it just needed air. Poured a glass and it unfolded nicely. Light Garnet core with brick edge. Aromas of Christmas spices (yes that’s a little mint) sous bois, dried plum and currant. Medium bodied with medium acidity. Tannins fully resolved. Finish was pleasant and just long enough to make you wonder how long this wine will go. Fun fact: 1983 was the year that Clos Du Val opened their tasting room adjacent to the winery itself. What were you doing in 1983? Well recommended in terms of drinking but highly recommend drinking as much old Napa cab as you can get your hands on….Cheers !
