88 Points

Friday, April 22, 2011 - This too has a not quite medium intensely coloured core showing some age. There’s some ruby still present, but the tone is more sombre than the previous wine. The medium intense nose is showing some undergrowth, hung game, dried thyme and an infusion of ferrous minerals. Medium-plus bodied on the attack, the texture is a lot more refined here, despite not completely ripe medium-minus tannins and just enough (medium) acidity to keep things fresh. Medium intense flavours of dried red fruits reveive added interest from some pine needle on the arôme de bouche and the whole remains well balanced for about 20 seconds. This wine deserves 88 points on my scale and is another candidate for immediate drinking. I guessed Chambolle, but wasn’t too surprised when it turned out to be Gevrey-Chambertin 1997 – Armand Rousseau. Despite the non-typical vintage, the minerality and robe sombre should have given me a clue at least.
