2019 Abreu Madrona Ranch

98 Points

Tuesday, December 7, 2021 - Tasted in barrel with Brad Grimes alongside the other 3 SVDs (Thorevilos, Las Posadas and Capella) and was tied for 1st for the day with the 18' Bella Oaks. Like many other 19's in barrel, I found many of the wines in this vintage to be surprisingly approachable so young (19' Promontory, 19' VV Dr. Crane, 19' Harlan come to mind). The 19' Abreu Madrona had a nice balance with dark fruits, beautiful tannins and some earthy components. This definitely felt like the star in the lineup with the Thorevilos nipping at its heels, followed by Las Posadas and Capella. I will be seeking all three when they release.

Speaking to Brad, it looked like the 19's in barrel in terms of its blend was essentially done. He too, mentioned that the 19's in barrel were drinking surprisingly well and it actually worried him a bit in the beginning. But, when he heard from other people in the industry that their wines were progressing along the same track, he calmed down a bit. All the 19' Abreu wines were just beautiful. This is a style I just love. If people love Carter, this probably isn't their jam. But, if you love VHR or Eisele then other people need to seek out these wines.

Another data point is AG mentioning that the 19' VHR is reminding him of 13' and 16'. That was interesting.

VHR- curious on the ‘13 & ‘16 references as to me at least those are drastically different beasts but I could see ‘19 being better than ‘18 as FP tends to lean a touch more old world and ‘16 created incredible pull in the other direction and ‘19 will be even more. Can’t wait to tatse those as I did load up on ‘18
