90 Points

Tuesday, January 3, 2012 - This is the reason we drink Zin. This wine sat in a wine shop shelf for maybe as long as 4 years, gathering dust as later vintages of the same wine flew off the shelves. I'm glad it was there. Has plenty of stuffing and structure to age longer, but think it is time to drink up. The nose is pure Zinfandel with blackberry jam, alcohol, and blueberry pie. Super deep purple color. The fruit has that grainy fruitiness from old vines of heavily extracted thin skin grapes. The brambly blackberry fruit coats the whole palate. There is a pronounced white pepper spiciness that belies the age of this bottle, giving it a very youthful approach, and continuing all the way through the finish. Cute little dry tannins. The oak seems American, and might be contributing to the spiciness. What at release must have been a very fruity finish is now more dry, and leaves the palate coated with blueberries and blackberries.
