Wednesday, January 26, 2022 - Picked up for $4.99 in the hazerai bin at K&L. It's definitely a dark gold/amber, but not unreasonably so for a wine of its age. There's some nutty/rancio character on the nose, but alongside it there's honey, mango, lychee, and some white flowers. This must have been remarkably tropical when young.
On the palate there's still the thick, glycerol texture that one associates with viognier. Brown butter, mango, and a remarkable streak of minerality. The most surprising thing is the acid, which is still there. It's not a high acid wine by any definition, but it feels balanced. Overall, this shocked me by being drinkable, and it's another testament to how wines from the Chalone appellation always overperform for their price point.
