Thursday, April 15, 2010 - Sublime! The '01 & '02 are too far removed to remember, the '03 is either at an awkward stage or (more likely) too far gone, the "W.S. Hoopla" '05 was had too long ago to distinctly recall...but for me and in recent memory, this '06 edged out the '04 though, stylistically distinct. Whereas the '04 was solidly in-your-face; clearly taking advantage of the new world style change (and perhaps a hotter/more ripe year), this wine deftly straddled the line between modern unctuousness and old-world finesse. Aromatics were musky - Cameroon-wrapper cigar smoke and saddle leather. The fruit was moderately restrained with a palate impression that played off the aromatics with an almost creamy richness (reminiscent of the Abadia Retuerta Rivola's of the mid-'90's). The acidity was sufficient though you'd have to conclude that this is not a cool climate vineyard. Finally, the tannins were dusty and slightly chalky but in perfect balance, which led to a full, impressionable finish. Definitely complimentary at the dinner table, though I could have just sat & sipped this all night long. This winery's clearly on a hot streak. Not only an outstanding QPR but more impressively, a wine of impeccable construction.
