Saturday, December 7, 2013 - Birthday lunch for KG, Alex and William (Hua Ting, Orchard Hotel): Very youthful for a 2000 Champagne – this still has some way to go before it hits a good drinking window, but the vintage Krug character and quality was there, so that quite a few of us picked this correctly when blinded. The nose was typical, with rich scents of apples and ripe lemons, with some cream and toast, a touch of earth, and a little spice and mineral accent at the edges. The palate was still very fresh and lively, with a fine creamy mousse on it. The 2000 character was there I the ripe, powerful feel of the wine, and there was plenty of tautly muscular structure and depth. However, this always remained very classy, never over-big or hefty, with subtle flavours of apples and white fruit and a long finish of flinty mineral and little bit of spice. Still so very youthful, this needs many years yet, but it is very good.
