Saturday, July 17, 2010 - Just the other night I watched Vaynerchuk's interview of Kermit Lynch (the interview can be found on Kermit's blog at the top where it says wine library video)and at one point while tasting a Cote du Rhone blanc both agreed that perhaps the most important aspect of any wine is balance. For a wine to even be considered attractive and well made there must be enough acid to support the body, enough tannin to support the fruit, enough fruit to stand up to the oak. There are quite a few interactions occurring in every wine. Balance is key. The 2005 Vacqueyras from Montirius didn't get the memo. This wine thought it could walk into the room smelling mostly of alcohol, cherry cough syrup, and a bit of brett. A touch of brett I normally welcome but not when it simply acts to spice up the cough syrup. I'm ok with big, highly extracted wine like Amarone but there must be balance and the Montirius missed the mark big time.
