Saturday, August 12, 2017 - Château Palmer vertical tasting dinner (3030 Ocean, Fort Lauderdale, Florida): From the get-go, this vintage was out-classed by the 1961 and 1966 on this evening. You could just tell it was off its peak. There was lots of funkiness, and it was a bit rustic in style. Truffled red fruits, barnyard, and dried roses on the nose. The finish was very straightforward, and with average length. I found this bottle to be quite interesting, as I recently drank a bottle of 1970 Palmer while in Bordeaux; that bottle had come directly from the Mähler-Besse cellar, and had not moved since bottling. That bottle seemed so young that you could have guessed it was from the 1980s! It emphasized again how each bottle takes a different evolutionary path influenced by its history, and in the case of these two bottles, an amazingly divergent path!
