Friday, January 20, 2023 - Impulse Purchase @ Costco. On a flyer, I wanted to try an inexpensive Merlot.
13.0% abv, $5 ($9 less $4 discount)
Prior offerings from this vintner have been in the lower-cost category; several varietals (both reds and white) from Northern California, I believe this is their first foray into "down-under" territory (South Eastern Australia).

"Popped & Poured" with Chinese Take-out. First impressions were quite disappointing; seemed both lighter-colored, and lighter-bodied for a merlot; drinking more like a Nouveau Beaujolais than a Merlot. Setting it aside, I decided to re-sample some days later. To my utter surprise the wine had 'opened-up;' blossomed, so to speak. (That or spouse had dumped the bottle & replaced the contents with another wine.)

Purplish-red in the glass, nose was fragrant with blackberry and plum and heartier flavor. Moderate acidity with ample tannins, leaving a slight 'fuzzy-tooth' feel. Nice, tart, lingering finish. I couldn't detect any indication of spoilage (an indication of high acidity, I believe). I'll buy more, but decant for several hours prior to consuming.
