Friday, February 7, 2020 - Good news at work called for celebration! This Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve carried a sticker "Specially Selected for Viking Line" and seemed to have spent additional time on the lees before it was disgorged: “Laid in chalk cellars in 2008, disgorged in 2016.”, so most likely 2007 base vintage, eight years on the lees, with 40% reserve wines. A blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.

The wine was medium gold in colour, with intense, medium-fine perlage. It had a complex bouquet that included aromas of citrus, apple, nuts, brioche and honey. The palate was equally complex: Citrus, apple, nuts, almond paste, brioche, a lovely wild honey component and smoke were backed by underlying minerality, with fine, creamy mousse, lively acidity and superb length of the aspirin-like finish. Quite rich and ever so slightly oxidative after some aeration. A great bottle that fitted for the occasion!
