Saturday, November 20, 2021 - From 75cl, perfect cork, decanted off substantial deposit 1 hour, followed over 2 hours. Typical Médoc, but not necessarily Margaux scent, quite restrained, mainly oak/cedar/pencil, not a hint of violets or floral action. The whole palate is tight and scrawny, gaining an unpleasant bitter edge as the remaining tannins kick in. Raw, leathery finish. I have always loved Brane Cantenac in the past (1970 waaaaaay back in the day, more recently 1975, 1982, 1985, 1989...) but this 2000 seems like a very tough customer indeed. Blind I would have guessed a Cru Bourgeois from further North, perhaps Sociando caught in a rough intermediate phase of maturity. Or Phélan in a tough, tannic year. Perhaps my remaining bottles might blossom in 8–10 years, but I'm afraid the best I can offer tonight for this one is 87–88P
