Tuesday, January 15, 2019 - Old Barolo Night (Bar-a-Thym, Singapore): Wonderful. This was the pick of its flight (alongside a '61 Prunotto and a '78 Bartolo Mascarello). Ageless at 60 years old, its nose did not have the salty, old smells of the 1961 Prunotto. Instead, this sweet and seductive, with lovely drifts of dried red fruit, dried rose petals, fresh herb and a hint of tar, all riding on a bed of earthier, meatier aromas. Fabulous smells. If anything, the palate was even better. Soft, silky and seductive, with beautifully resolved tannins, and fresh citrus acidity - still giving a nice sense of structure underneath wonderfully soft, and gently complex flavours of sweet red cherries and berries, then earth and tar and peppery spice, all this pulling away into a gentle, but insistently long finish. Just such a joy to drink. Beautifully, ethereal stuff. Clearly mature, but still drinking so very charmingly now. This has everything I like in classic old Barolo.
