Cork in very good condition. I've seen 5 year old wines with corks in worse condition.
Just after popping the cork, it has a smoky tobacco, caramel, spice and tangy fruit nose. The palate glides on the attack and the mid-palate with ripe dark and red fruit, good acidity and some mouthwatering saline minerality and mint on the back end. Also some of that spice and cedar. Nicely balanced, but the tannins are still quite present, but it should be fine with food and little more air. Plus, it makes you want food like a nice steak or maybe some grilled duck. What puts this above your middle of the road Bordeaux is the length. It just lingers in your mouth over a minute. Can’t wait to see how this evolves over the meal.
After 2.5 hours breathing in bottle, it softens up a bit with added meaty and vanilla notes. Slight tinge of mushroom but still feels rather young for 20 years of age with more tertiary notes to come. After an hour+ thru the meal, more obvious mushroom notes while keeping the fruit and elegant structure.
Overall, it’s a wine just entering maturity. Drink now with a short decant or hold 10+ years.
